I'm slightly obsessed with extravagant candles. I find the aroma-filled flicker of scented candles both meditative and escapist. Even when I'm city-bound during my travels, the most ingeniously designed of the bunch can transport me to a lush orange garden on the Côte d’Azur, or through the vibrant, flower-lined avenues of Champs-Élysées, or amid the serene, misty lakeshores of Como.

Slip on those silk pyjamas, pour yourself a flute of champagne, and let these heaven-scented luxury candles relax your mind.

Here are some of my favourite picks for creating an ambiance of elegance and tranquillity, perfect for those who cherish the art of fragrance.

The couture candle.

I'm currently adoring the Balmain Paris x Cire Trudon candle. The ornate gold-and-black-striped holder is created using gold leaf that is meticulously applied by hand. A blend of black rose, tobacco, leather and amber, this is a heady one that was made for autumnal evenings in front of the fire.

The work of art.

Then, of course, there is my Fornasetti architettura candle which sits elegantly on my desk. A suggestively scented candle, housed in a glazed ceramic jar decorated with a black and white motive inspired by the amphitheatres of the Roman empire. The scent inspired by the herbs of the Fornasett family’s own herbal garden is a blended fragrance of lavender, cedar and iris, rounded off in a base of tolu balsam, incense and birch.

The object of desire.

L’Object’s Hass Unicorn Candle is a meeting of imaginative minds and skilled hands and Inspired by the otherworldly landscape of Joshua Tree. This object of desire is expertly crafted in fine porcelain with 24kt gold accents, and infused with woody notes of the desert-inspired Mojave Palm fragrance when lit. This unusual piece is a grand centrepiece in my lounge room that never ceases to wow my guests.

The high fashion candle.

If it’s a designer fix you’re after, look no further than the Gucci Alchemist’s Garden candle. It's inspired by the first perfumery containers displayed on the wooden shelves of antique apothecaries; the violet scented candle is presented in a precious, white porcelain jar adorned with real gold accents. Dreamy and luxuriously magical, it sits so pretty on my dresser.

The decadent candle.

The Rosenthal Versace Golden Medusa is as decadent as the rest of the Italian fashion house’s homeware collection and sparks immediate intrigue. Set in an opulent gold finish with delicate baroque motif pattern, it creates a stunning glow, while dispensing an intoxicatingly, luxurious “Le Jardin de Versace” scent throughout my art studio.

As the day wanes and I light these exquisite candles, their glow casting dancing shadows, I am reminded that true luxury lies not only in the visual or the tangible, but in the fragrant narrative that unfolds with each burn. Each scent, a story; each flame, a journey, carrying whispers of far-off lands right to the sanctuary of my studio. It's here, amid the soft crackle and warm light, that I find inspiration and solace—a testament to the understated power of a beautiful candle to illuminate not just a room, but the imagination itself.
